Obituary of Joan Louise MacMillan

Joan Louise MacMillan passed away peacefully on November 1, 2019 at the age of 71 at the Red Deer Hospital with Angus at her side.  She will be dearly missed by her loving husband Angus, children Sherry (Colin) Moore of Lyalta, Ab.,  Brent (Crystal) MacMillan of Rimbey, Ab., Cory (Taralynn) MacMillan of Youngstown, Ab., and 11 grandchildren; Brenden, Sarah, Adam, Mitchell, Dakota, Marysia, Spencer, Corbin, Kale, Kennedi and Jillayna.  Joan will also be mourned by her sister Bev Mott; brothers Clayton (Donnalyn) Grant; Stanley (Mary) Grant; as well as her extended family and many friends.  A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at the Youngstown Hall in Youngstown, Alberta on November 9th, 2019 at 2 pm.

Joan was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Lillian, brother-in-law Bob Mott and nephew Garrett Grant.

Joan will be remembered as a wonderfully caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, relative and friend to many people.  Joan was born on August 31, 1948 in Winnipeg, Manitoba as the second child of Herbert and Lillian Grant.  By the age of 13 Joan was wholly and lovingly accepted into the MacMillan family and officially became a part of the family July 15, 1967 when she married Angus. They started their life together in Winnipeg, eventually moving to Calgary in 1979. They later settled in Rimbey and finally in Youngstown in the spring of 2018.

Their lives were greatly enriched with the birth of Sherry Lynn September 18, 1971; Brent David October 8, 1972 and finally, Cory James September 1, 1977. 

Joan worked as a hairdresser in Winnipeg at the Fashionette from the age of 16 until moving to Calgary.  She spent 25 plus years with the Calgary School Board as an educational assistant and really loved her job and everyone she worked with.  Amidst all of this she always found time to spend with her many friends and family.  Joan’s love for entertaining and always having food prepped for an army will always be remembered.  Joan was always busy. She never wanted to sit still and was forever bustling about, wiping this surface or that, tidying up and deep cleaning and loved to have her house full. 

Joan loved family.  She loved following their lives, sports and activities.  Joan also found pleasure from her dogs, gardening, flowers, knick knacks, pickling and cooking.  

Joan’s courageous battle with cancer began 4 years ago and she put up a valiant fight.  She met and drew strength from so many special people through her cancer journey. Joan never lost her zest for life and continued to love to visit with anyone who crossed her path.
