Obituary of Margaret "Peggy" Rose Bartman
Margaret (Peggy) Rose Bartman was born on November 18, 1930 in Bengal, India and passed away on June 14, 2020 in Hanna, Alberta at the age of 89 years.
She was one of 6 children born to Thomas and Margaret Lehaney of England.
She spent the first 6 years of her childhood in India, and then in 1937 the family relocated to England to have a better life.
While living in England she experienced World War II. During that period she was one of the many children that were evacuated to different homes across Scotland to miss the bombings.
In 1947 Peggy’s mother passed away from cancer, so at the age of 16, Peggy and her younger brother, Bob headed to Canada. They were looking forward to starting a new life in Hanna with older sister Janet. They arrived by ship to Halifax and on to Calgary by rail. On the day of their arrival in Calgary on 8th Ave Peggy was introduced to a young man from Hanna, his name was Ross Bartman, he was travelling on the same train back to Hanna.
Upon arrival in Hanna she began working as a telephone operator for AGT. Over the years she worked part time at several retail outlets, Sears, Magnet Shoes, and Hanna Discount Foods.
In 1948 Peggy & Ross started dating and were married on September 24, 1950. They were blessed with 3 children; Allan, Sheila and Gord.
Throughout the years she enjoyed spending time with her friends, coffee parties, sewing club, she was an avid reader, and a member of the Hanna library. She never held a drivers licence so she was seen everywhere on her bike, and then in later years, Harvey, her motorized scooter.
Peggy and Ross travelled to Eastern Canada and parts of the US, but her travelling highlight was returning to England in 1978 to visit her brother, Thomas after 40 years. While there Peggy had the good fortune to meet a neighbour lady who remembered her from childhood.
In 1965, Ross and Peggy purchased property at Rochon Sands, where they spent many holidays and weekends at their cottage with family and friends.
Christmas was her favourite time of the year. Often you would find her in the early mornings in her favourite chair, a cup of tea in hand admiring her tree, colourful decorations and lights. In the evenings she would play her favorite Christmas records.
Peggy loved each and every one of her grandchildren. She attended every activity that she could, from hockey, skating, tae-kwon do, music jamming, baseball and school sports.
She leaves to mourn her passing by her children, Allan (Debra), Sheila (Deryl), Gord (Cindy), her grandchildren Scott (Kylie), Dayna, Monte (Alysa), Jodi (Mike), Lisa, Blair (Monica), Brett (Randi), as well as her great grandchildren, Kamden, Kinsey, Greyson, Amrie, Shelby, Brinley, Laker, Hunter, Kira, Dominic and Nolan.
Peggy will be lovingly missed by her family, her witty sense of humour and her love of life.
If friends so desire donations may be made in Peggy’s name to the Sunshine Club, Box 160, Hanna, Alberta, T0J 1P0.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
