Condolences to his daughter and relatives. Robert lived down the street from me at the end of his life. He was a quiet man with a wicked sense of humour. I loved running into him and Marilyn and had coffee with them a couple of times. He always kept everyone in stitches. He brought humour wherever he went, no matter the situation. Rest in peace Robert.

Thanks to Herb Reynolds and, by receiving copies of the memories and condolences sent by other Brothers, I too, received the sad news of Bob’s passing.
I occasionally did some work in Morrin Ab, which is not far from Hanna. On one trip, in about 1988, there was a meeting in Hanna, so I decided to get in touch with Bob, although we had not been in touch for more than 20 years, we had a great phone call, that lasted more than 45 minutes. Full of laughter and memories of our Fraternity days, and law class antics. We both commented that all of “the old guys..” should get together. Bob’s comment was “laughter, friendships and memories and more get togethers are good for the soul…” Nothing to further these thoughts was done.
Fast forward to 2002, I was spending a few days in the U of A hospital. I was in one of those 2 bed rooms, closest to the window with a curtain dividing the room and blocking my view of the door and my neighbour patient. I then heard a voice say “ you are not Mike Welsh”. I thought that the voice was familiar, but could not put a name to it. The neighbour said “I think he is in the next bed”.
The other voice (Bob’s), said “is he still alive, I hope so, because as soon as I heard, I rushed right over”. Bob then sat and talked with the neighbour for 10+ minutes and had him laughing about some of the happenings in past years. I had not seen Bob yet, but knew who it was from the stories being told. After about 10 minutes, Bob said “keep holding on Mike, I’m coming. “. By then all 3 of us and a nurse who had come in to listen, were probably close to tears from laughing. After he came into my side of the room, we pulled back the dividing curtain, so the neighbour and some passing, but interested medical staff, could join in with their laughter.
It turned out that Bob had come to visit someone else, and while waiting at the Info desk to find out that person’s room #, heard the person in front of him mention my name. After his other visit, he came to my room, stayed more than an hour, and brought laughter to a number of us.
He was one of a kind!!!!

I just learned of Bob's passing. When I last talked to him, in early 2021, he said he was expecting to die soon from lung cancer, then laughed and lit another cigarette. We met as freshman pledges in the Delta Upsilon Fraternity house at the University of Alberta. His fraternity brothers recognized his sense of humour as the best - original, usually sardonic, his jokes were not always understood by those who took life and themselves terribly seriously. Everybody liked Bob. I mean everybody. Integral to his charm were his neuroses - addiction to tobacco, elaborate schemes to avoid writing exams which probably took more time and energy than conventional grinding study would have, praise for others and self-disparagement. In the wee hours of morning, in the fraternity house after we had taken our dates home, drinking scotch and smoking Lucky Strikes, eyes watering from laughing at one another's irreverent jokes, far beyond what is considered politically incorrect today, I'm sure Bob"s DU fraternity brothers would join me in thanking Bob for contributing to the best times of our lives. Robert was my first cousin as his mother was my dad's brother. During our early youth we had many great time not only in Edmonton but also Hanna. In particular, I spent many a Summer in Hanna enjoying Aunt Margaret's sincere hospitality. It was downright fun with Robert during those salad days having always allowed free entry to all movies courtesy of Aunt Margaret enjoying Coke Floats at a nearby dinner having 5 cent tune selections, mass at St Georges, daily evening prayer before bed, frequent gardening jobs including painting the backyard picket fence. Tenting sojourns. Playing Monopoly on those rainy days at Mori and Marylyn's place where , Robert would often win.
Later in life we did keep in touch so much so that Robert & Margaret came to Halifax and stayed with us while visiting with Margaret's sister, a Sister of Charity at Mount St Vincent mother house. Frequent trips to Hanna were made while I was serving with the Army Base in Edmonton.
My last face to face visit with Robert was about 6 years ago where we pulled a all- nighter enjoying sharing a lifetime of memories.
A great distance between Alberta and Nova Scotia was mitigated, somewhat, by the telephone and computer until Christmas 2020 where all communication ceased and I just found out about Robert's passing 12 August through cousin Denise.
Rest in peace, Robert you are missed. Heartfelt condolences to Mori and his daughter

My sincere condolences to Robert's family and friends who will miss him dearly. I worked at the concession stand at the theatre starting at 13 yrs old and enjoyed working there for the following 5 years, 5 - 7 nights per week in the mid - late 1980s; wonderful way to spend teenage years - way better than doing homework, and no doubt Jason Fandrich will agree. Robert had a huge impact on my life - his sense of humour, which is so well captured in the obituary, his way of looking at the world, and his love for all kinds of music. Thanks to him, I learned that music existed beyond Q91, CKXL and MTV. If you ever came to a 'show', you may have noticed background music playing before John Bruce or Blaise Tivadar rolled the film; this background music was carefully curated by Robert - Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, The Big Bopper, Motown - all of the good stuff which to this day remains some of my favourite music. He was wonderfully irrerevent - when he would return from the city after picking up a film, his windshield would be full of unpaid parking tickets. He has also left me with a life-long dependence on popcorn - a once per week indulgence, and last night in his honour, I added extra butter - knowing that Robert would have happily charged me .25 extra for that. I regret not having the chance to talk with him in my adult years - we would have enjoyed a lot of laughs on the absurdity of life, as he was so good at seeing. Rest in peace, Robert.

Michelle - I'd love to share more memories if you'd like to hear some! Of your grandma Margaret too. They were such characters. Maybe connect with me on Facebook or LInkedIn?

Leona, I'm a Luddite and I'm not on social media! But I will be in Hanna probably in April. Laurie has my email address, and I will ask her to pass it on to you, so we can arrange to meet when I get out there.
