Obituary of Melvin Metzger

Melvin Metzger passed away in the Hanna Hospital September 15, 2017 at the age of 91. Melvin is predeceased by his parents Karl and Emily Metzger along with all of his siblings Lorraine Weich, Edwin Metzger, Edna Raugust, Gladys Thorton, Harold Metzger, Victor Metzger, Norman Metzger and Raymond Metzger. Melvin married Violet Pfahl on April 17, 1949, and had three children: Charlotte, Milton and Larry. Melvin is survived by his wife, Violet Metzger; daughter Charlotte (Richard Preston), their daughters: Charlene, and Joleen (Cody Scott) and their sons: Chance and Colby; son Milton (Terry), their children: Michael (Shelly), their children: Tianna, Richelle, Cameron, Destany and Violet, David (Aislyn) and their children: Bentley and Sullivan, and Melissa; son Larry (Wendy Alspach), Kim BrownMetzger and her children: Garrik and Olivia; and sister-in-law Verlene Fecho. Melvin and Violet lived in Hanna when they were first married. Melvin worked on the railway at that time. They then moved to the Craigmyle community for 47 years, where Melvin farmed and drove school bus. When they retired, they moved back to Hanna to the Parkview Manor, in 1999. When Melvin was younger, he loved to play baseball. When he no longer could play, he still enjoyed watching baseball on TV, especially the Toronto Blue Jays. He enjoyed watching most sports, except for golf; and tried to take-in some of the grandkids and great-grandkids live sporting events. Wild bird hunting with his friends and children was another one of his fall hobbies. Melvin loved fishing, he made sure that he taught all his children, grandchildren, and even some of his great-grandchildren to fish. Many hours were spent playing cards with friends and family. He was always ready to play a good game of canasta. Melvin was a very resilient man. He had a couple heart attacks over the years, and was diagnosed with kidney disease in November 2005, which played a toll on his body — going for dialysis 3 times a week. Melvin looked forward to every special event that was happening in his family life, such as a special birthday, anniversary, wedding or birth of a child, grandchild or great grandchild. He will be missed by eveyone’s lives who he touched. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017, at the First United Church, Hanna, with Rev. Leila Currie officiating.
