Obituary of Alma Karg
Alma Karg
Obituary
1926 ~ 2023
Alma Karg passed away at Hanna Long Term Care on March 14, 2023. Alma had celebrated her 97th birthday just one week prior to her death.
Alma was born in Hanna to Rudolf and Augustina Doering on March 7, 1926. She was the eldest in a family of eight children and due to the sudden death of her mother when she was twelve, she took on many family rearing, and household management chores at a young age. Alma always said that she preferred doing the outside work instead of the housework.
Alma attended school at both Dalkeith and Parr schools. Once she finished her years of studies she babysat and cleaned for family and neighbours. Eventually she travelled to Calgary where she worked in the kitchen of the Colonel Belcher Hospital for a year before she returned to the community south of Hanna and married Henry Karg on October 26, 1947. Alma and Henry were blessed with three sons: Wes in 1948, Miles in 1953, and Clayton in 1958.
Alma was active in the Golden Hill Ladies club and the Bullpound Community Association during her years in the Bullpound community. She loved to garden, pickle, can, and bake.
Alma and Henry moved to Hanna in 1987 and Alma continued a very active lifestyle. Alma worked the Hospital Rummage sale each spring and fall. She was the Pastoral Care person at the First United Church for a number of years. For this position she regularly visited at the hospital and sent out cards for all occasions to church members. She was a member of the ladies group at the church and helped to do lunches at funerals. Alma loved to sing and she sang in both the church and Senior's Community choirs. She curled with the Bullpound Curling club and also played floor curling with the seniors.
Alma was one of the best neighbours imaginable as she was always sharing baking and helping in any way she could help.
After Henry's death in 2004, Alma moved first to the manor, and eventually, when she needed more supports to the Lodge and then Long Term Care.
Alma always told us at each visit that the people at the Long Term Care took extremely good care of her. All of the members of her family would like to sincerely thank the staff at the Long Term Care for their incredible kindness and excellent care during those last years.
Alma was predeceased by her husband Henry, Mother, Father, sisters Ella Karg and Viola Diduck, and brothers Walter and Adolf Doering.
She is survived by her sons: Wes (Ruth) in Hanna, Miles (Arlene) in Okotoks, and Clayton (Kathy) in Crossfield; brother Reinhold Doering, sisters Bernice Oneill and Helen Merchant; ten Grandchildren and fourteen Great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, 2:00 p.m., at the First United Church in Hanna, AB.
If desired, donations in memory of Alma can be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.
